Transitex appealed to the Secretary of Agricultural Defence of MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply) of Brazil to suspend the normative instruction 26/2020. This IN (NI) made the fumigation of plums with methyl bromide, also known as bromomethane, mandatory after the 1st of June, 2020.
Since 2004, the use of this chemical has been banned throughout the European Union. Thus, the 2020 stone fruit campaign has been compromised, since the main product imported from Europe during this campaign are plums. The impediment to the entry of Portuguese and Spanish plums into Brazil has come to harm not only Iberian exporters, but also Brazilian importers, who for years have sold and distributed this product of which they are knowledgeable, both of its of quality and origin.
Transitex compiled, for presentation to the MAPA’s Secretary of Agricultural Defence, the main information on the export of plum to Brazil in the last two decades, proving the security of the entry of this product in the country, in order to call for a review of the IN 26/2020,
Transitex team is still waiting for the results of this action, which will be made known to exporters and importers waiting for the resumption of the 2020 stone fruit campaign.
